Since 2021, the Sikh community in California has been coming together to support Mark Twain Medical Center during its annual Copper Valley Punjabi Charity Golf Tournament.
Charanjit (CJ) Singh is the Director of Marketing, Communications and Philanthropy at Mark Twain Medical Center Foundation in San Andreas, California. CJ’s father has always wanted to bring people together and highlight the contributions of the Sikh community to the broader community. With a dedicated team of volunteers, CJ and his brother set out to make their dad’s vision a reality.
“My passion for golf and a deep commitment to my Sikh community, which has been underrepresented, were the reasons for establishing this tournament,” explains CJ. “With the help of my family and sponsors, we have had three successful tournaments to date and look forward to many more.”
Coming together for a common cause
The tournament was established to support the naming of the emergency department at the hospital in honor of the founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak. Golfers from across six states — California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona and Illinois — have attended the event over the past three years. During that time, there have been more than 140 golfers and an additional 20 attendees who are a part of the dinner and awards ceremony.
“The first year, the tournament sold out two weeks before the day of the event,” says CJ. “And the last two years, it has sold out in less than 24 hours of registration opening.”
“The tournament is such a success because it is not about personal gain, but for uplifting the community,” says tournament co-founder, Baljit Singh Johal. “We also have a very precise attention to detail from the second the golfers step foot on the property. It’s all about the golfer experience. We will continue to grow and support our community.”
Healthier communities and brighter futures
Manny Bhandal and his company Bhandal Bros. has been involved with the tournament since its inception. “I decided to become a sponsor because I believe in supporting causes and initiatives that align with my values and goals. Whether it’s helping a community in need, advancing a worthwhile project, or supporting individuals striving to reach their full potential, sponsorship provides a tangible way to make a positive impact. Plus, it’s incredibly rewarding to see the direct results of your support and know that you’re contributing to positive change.”
He adds that the tournament and funds raised mean a great deal to the hospital and the community it serves. “First, the financial support directly contributes to the vital need for an upgraded emergency room. Beyond the financial aspect, the tournament fosters a sense of community engagement and solidarity. It brings together people from all walks of life, united in their support for a common cause. In essence, the tournament and the funds raised are a lifeline for the hospital and a beacon of hope for the community, symbolizing the power of collective action to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”
CJ believes that supporting hospitals and participating in community events isn’t just about giving; it’s about creating a ripple effect of healing and hope. “Your contribution today could be the lifeline someone needs tomorrow. Together, we can build healthier communities and brighter futures.”
